jpayne@68 5 .SH DESCRIPTION
jpayne@68 6 PNG (Portable Network Graphics) is an extensible file format for the
jpayne@68 7 lossless, portable, well-compressed storage of raster images. PNG
jpayne@68 8 provides a patent-free replacement for GIF, and can also replace many
jpayne@68 9 common uses of TIFF. Indexed-color, grayscale, and truecolor images are
jpayne@68 10 supported, plus an optional alpha channel. Sample depths range from
jpayne@68 11 1 to 16 bits.
jpayne@68 12 .br
jpayne@68 13 PNG is designed to work well in online viewing applications, such
jpayne@68 14 as the World Wide Web, so it is fully streamable with a progressive
jpayne@68 15 display option. PNG is robust, providing both full file integrity
jpayne@68 16 checking and fast, simple detection of common transmission errors.
jpayne@68 17 Also, PNG can store gamma and chromaticity data for improved color
jpayne@68 18 matching on heterogeneous platforms.
